Thanksgiving, Post-constitutional America, Ecclesia Non Grata, Vindiciae Contra Tyrannos and Leaving Facebook

Thanksgiving will be memorable for everyone in 2020. Some of you will have downtime over the next new days. Let’s take time to ‘understand the times’ and discern this cultural moment.

I’m spending time in my Bible and in prayer (if you have a specific prayer request you would like to share with me, please let me know – my contact is on the ‘about me’ page).

I have compiled some links for you to explore and think about below. Perhaps, we can think deeply about such things?

[Article] The real question behind Thanksgiving (2014):
The real question behind Thanksgiving is NOT, “What am I Thankful for?” The real question is“Where do I begin?”

[Article] Post-constitutional America (by Nathan Pinkoski November 2020)
This article in First Things is a review of the bookThe Stakes: America at the Point of No Return by Michael Anton. “The Stakes exhorts Americans to take eternal principles of historical causation seriously. According to these principles, all regimes, including the one created by the founders of the United States, eventually decline and fall. The Stakes gives an appealing account of the sort of republic that America is supposed to be. The bulk of the book details the way in which that regime has already—perhaps irreversibly—declined.”

[Article] Ecclesia Non Grata by Regis Nicoll on the Deepening Loss of Religious Freedom & Our Response
Regis Nicoll is a retired nuclear engineer and physicist who is a Colson Center Fellow and Christian commentator. He currently writes for BreakPoint, Crosswalk, and Salvo magazine, and serves as the lay pastor of an Anglican church plant in Chattanooga

[Podcast] Property Rights are Human Rights by Douglas Wilson
Doug Wilson cuts straight to the heart of the issues with a clear biblical understanding.

[Podcast] Mobilizing Fathers to Close Prisons – Dr. Anthony Bradley (Friendship, wrestling, and the need for other dad-practices in culture).
John Stonestreet interviews Dr. Anthony Bradley. “Dr. Bradley is mobilizing fathers. His vision is to inspire dads to engage their children. He believes that in building strong fathering habits, we can close prisons.”

[Book] Vindiciae Contra Tyrannos – Junius Brutus (Introduction by Dr. Glenn Sunshine)
I’m reading this book at the moment. A bit difficult read (for me) but worht it.

“Despite its brevity, the Vindiciae’s sharp defense of the right of subjects to resist unjust or ungodly rulers even to the point of armed rebellion helped shape the political theories of John Locke in England and the American Founding Fathers.

Its arguments on the rights and responsibilities of rulers and subjects continue to be relevant today as we consider the limits of the power of the government and the rights of citizens to oppose governmental overreach.” – Dr. Glenn Sunshine, from the Introduction

[Podcast] Joe Rogan Experience interview with TRISTAN HARRIS (warning explicit language)
Note: I included this podcast because Tristian is an expert on Social Media and how it manipulates human thought, belief and behavior. He brings an important perspective that needs to be considered everyone, regardless if you us social media or not. “Tristan Harris spent three years as a Google Design Ethicist developing a framework for how technology should “ethically” steer the thoughts and actions of billions of people from screens. He is now co-founder & president of the Center for Humane Technology, whose mission is to reverse ‘human downgrading’ and re-align technology with humanity. “

[Article] Facebook: All good things come to an end by Lance Cashion
All good things decay unless they are reclaimed and restored. That’s not going to happen with Facebook. They are too far gone.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
